BONDED RPE 

The bonded rapid palatal expander (RPE) is a standard appliance in orthodontic treatment. It utilizes a jackscrew welded to a steel framework to implement transverse expansion and arch development. This bonded version avoids the use of bands, including instead a custom-fit acrylic pad to bond directly to the teeth. The RPE is available on the upper arch only. It is generally used in patients who have not yet reached skeletal maturity, as the maxilla is still growing and therefore able to be expanded. The RPE can also be used in patients with mild mid-palatal suture separation. The benefits of using the bonded RPE include avoidance of the need for bands (which can sometimes slip or loosen), and the fact that it is easier to keep clean than an expansile banded appliance.
